The reading and lecture are both about a device, which is used for growing trees to stop desertification. The author of the article provides three reasons why this device will be unsuccessful. However, the lecturer disputes all the claims made in the passage.
First of all, the passage explains that in the process of growing many trees, the device cost will be expensive overall for some poor countries. In contrast, the professor points out that when young trees get bigger, the device will be removed and it can be used many times, thus reducing the overall cost.
Secondly, the author of the reading passage claims that to fight desertification, local people who are thriving during harsh conditions have to participate in the process and they are barely providing for their needs. So, it will be hard to convince them since there are no advantages. However, the professor contradicts that being part of the process will benefit local people. She goes on to say that they can use the device for other plants and when the tree is mature, they can use the branches for their daily needs like firewood.
Finally, the reading passage points out that the trees will not survive because of the device's poor water collection and poor precipitation, However, the professor claims that the trees will survive because by growing bigger, they will be old enough to grow long roots and gain moisture from soil underground. She supports this by taking an example of the Sahara Desert, which survived a harsh environment after the device was removed.
As you can see, the author and the reader hold very different views of this device.
