The author discusses three possible solution to solve the problem of declining population of Torreya taxifolia. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubts on and attacks each of the claim made in the reading.
To begin with, the author mentions that planting Torreya seeds in areas with microclimate of great humidity and coolness can possibly make Torreya thrive and become abundant again. It is also said in the passage that the microclimate in northern Florida is extremely beneficial to the growth of Torreya. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She rebuts by bringing up the point that the northern areas' microclimate are largely affected by the main climate of those regions, where are getting drier due to global warming and will affect the microclimate. Therefore, the lecturer's argument disapprove its counter part in the reading.
Secondly, the writer claims that the preservation can be done through relocating Torreya to a entire new environment. Again, the professor believes thatthere are flaws in the writer's argument. She elaborates this by pointing out that ecologists once moved one plant to another location on the purpose of preventing it from going extinct, and that plant turned out to spread so quickly that it killed some of the already endangered plants of that location.
Last but not least, the author says that Torreya can be kept in a research center to be protected from extinction. The lecturer is doubtful that this is accurate. She convincingly points out that plants in the lab being studied and protected should be in large population and be genetically diverse. Moreover, she suggests that the case of Torreya does not meet those criteria.
