Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they answer the specific problem presented in the passage.
The reading passage casts doubts on whether some of the paintings that are claimed to be the works of Rembrandt are really his work or not. To illustrate this, the reading passage uses an example of his famous work known as Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet. There are three reasons as to which the passage concludes that it is not the work of Rembrandt. First, there is inconsistency in clothing but Rembrandt was famous for attention to details in clothing styles. Second, Rembrandt was master of light and shadow but there is inconsistency here also. Third, no painting of Rembrandt used a panel of wood glued together but this one did. However, the lecture answers to all these points which are discussed below.
First, the lecture states that the fur collar was added about 100 years after the painting was first made. This was directly evident from the X-Ray research done in the labs. The fur collar was added in top of the original painting. The reason to do so might be to increase the value of the painting further.
Second, the lecture mentions that the X-Ray research also showed the original painting. On closely examining the newly revealed parts of the painting, it was observed that the dark fur was indeed a light colored clothing before the former was added. It is because of this light colored clothing that illuminated the face.
Lastly, the addition of the new dark fur collar was attached by gluing the wood panels together. It was done in order to enlarge the paintaing and make it more valuable. Furthermore, it was observed that the tree source used to make original wood panel was similar to the many other arts by Rembrandt.
To conclude, as evident from the reasons stated above, the lecture clearly explains and answers to each of the doubts and question that arises in the reading passage regarding the autenticity of Rembrandt's painting.
