Torrey plant survival
The article is about the Torreya taxifolia, an evergreen tree that now is endangered. So, to prevent it from extinction the author has mentioned a few solutions. However, the professor in her lecture states that none of the solutions would prevent extinction.
To begin with, the article states about the first solution is, that Torreya should be grown in the same location in which it was thriving that is microclimate. The author states that it has a cold temperature and the Torreya could again grow similarly. However, the professor is not satisfied with this solution and stated that it will be unlikely to succeed because of changes in the environment. Global warming has much influence on plant growth, also the wetlands are declining, and getting drier. So, the idea of changing to microclimate would not help much.
To move on to the next solution, the author states to move the Torreya to a different location and this migration will help to grow in a new location that is in the north where the temperature is much cooler. The professor again completely disagrees with this solution and to explain her point, she uses an example of the Black locust tree. It was migrated to another place for its growth but this migration lead to bad consequences. Its growth of it becomes so rapid that it killed other animals and led to other endangered species to extinction.
Another point mentioned by the author is Torreya should be shifted to the research center. In this way, they get proper protection, sampling, and close monitoring. The professor sees flaws in it and stated that in the laboratory there would be exposed to disease and as these trees are not exposed to such an environment, their survival would be difficult. Further, she added that the care of such a number would be difficult and less care makes their survival in the research center difficult.
