Wild tuna
The reading and the lecture are both about farming wild tuna. The author of the article provides three theories about supporting the claim that tuna farming will encounter several problems. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. His position is that there are promising solutions to these problems.
According to the reading, if female tuna are not free, they will not lay eggs, so abundant numbers of tuna is needed for this work. The article mentions that this procedure would decrease the population of tuna. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims this problem is not a big deal regarding new scientific advances. Additionally, he points out that tuna will lay eggs by injecting a particular hormone into them, and it does not have any health risk.
Secondly, the author suggests that this procedure is money-consuming since tuna feed on a certain protein which is exploited from other fish. In the article, it is said that tuna will become huge, and they need large amounts of food for survival. The
lecturer, however, asserts that the only source of this specific protein is not other fish. There are some plants that can produce this protein, so they would be processed for this purpose. He goes on to say that under this circumstance, tunas' price would be reduced, and it becomes inexpensive.
Finally, the author posits that some parasites will attack tuna and weaken them by clinging to them. The author contends that they become vulnerable to other diseases and they will die after a while. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is scientists find a solution to this problem. He notes that these kinds of parasites live in deep locations in oceans, and they cannot tolerate the conditions of the shore. So fostering tuna should take place near the coast.
