The reading and the lecture are both about the possibility of creating a permanent residence for humans on Venus. While the author of the reading argues that the conditions on Venus are so severe and inhospitable for humans to live, the professor disputes this claim. He states that it is possible for humans to live on Venus perennially. The lecturer casts doubt on the reasons made in the passage by presenting a practical solution. He says that if a floating station fifty kilometers above Venus's surface is built, all the problems discussed in the reading can be solved.
In the passage, the author begins by saying that atmospheric pressure at Venus is so greater than at Earth, and every humans and humans' stuff will be crushed soon after they land on the Venus' surface. However, the professor asserts that atmospheric pressure at the height of fifty kilometers is much lower than the pressure at Venus' surface. In fact, at this altitude, the pressure equals the pressure at Earth's surface. Consequently, no danger of crushing threatens humans and their station at this altitude.
Furthermore, according to the reading, there are no reservoirs of water on Venus's surface, and its atmosphere mainly contains carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid. There is no water vapor or oxygen in Venus's atmosphere. On the other hand, the professor points out that Venuse's atmosphere comprises compounds, mentioned in the text, that water and oxygen, vital for humans' life, can be obtained from them.
Finally, the writer believes that due to the thick layer of clouds and carbon dioxide filling Venuse's atmosphere, very little sunlight reaches the planet's surface, and most of the sunlight is reflected in space. This lack of light poses a serious problem in the process of generating electricity. Not surprisingly, the professor refutes this assertion by contending that in high altitudes, the layer of clouds and carbon dioxide is not very thick, and sunlight can easily pass through it. Also, solar power cells can use both reflected sunlight and direct sunlight. Thus, electricity will be generated even more than enough.
To sum up, both the author and the lecturer hold conflicting views on the possibility of building a permanent residence for humans on Venus.
