The reading passage supports the idea that Amtrak should be sold to the private company rather than owned by the government. However, the professor maintains that selling Amtrak to private companies is not supportive.
First, the reading passage suggests that according to the critics, many Amtrak routes do not have enough passengers in less developed areas so that the government costs a lot and suffers great losses. On the contrary, the professor argues that rather than making profits, the main purpose of Amtrak is to provide convenience to the public of the United States. Besides, people living in these remote places have the same right to enjoy the government service as the people living in more accessible places.
Second, the critics in reading passage insists that Amtrak creates negative influence on private transportation companies since they have to lower the ticket prices to compete with Amtrak. In contrast, the professor supports the idea that it is silly to say that funding Amtrak is unfair to Amtrak competitors. For example, the government supports the transportation industry in many kinds of ways, such as building the control tower and training the air traffic control officers. Thus, private airline could not exist without lots of financial support from the government.
Third, the reading contends that many travelers prefer to use private cars or other means of transport instead of the train, which means that the government should spend money in highway system will be more profitable. Nonetheless, the professor contends that if trains become more comfortable and faster, people would like to leave their cars at home. In fact, the government in these countries have invested high-speed train line and train travel is quite popular. Therefore, what the United States government should do is to provide more money to improve the train services.
