It is argued that increasing the minimum age for drivers is the most effective measure to enhance the safety on the roads. While this approach can potentially reduce the number of roads accidents, I maintain that imposing stricter punishments for traffic offenses and upgrading public transportation would be feasible solutions to address the root causes of traffic accidents.
Undoubtedly, raising the minimum age requirement for vehicle drivers can reduce the number of road collisions. In reality, young drivers who may lack experience and maturity are more likely to engage in reckless and dangerous driving behaviors, putting themselves and other commuters in danger. Requiring individuals to wait until they are older to obtain a formal driver’s license can encourage them to operate their vehicles more responsibly and cautiously, which contributes to a safer and more secure driving environment. For example, in some countries, such as Japan or South Korea, where the minimum age for drivers is high, have lower rates of traffic accidents involving young people.
However, increasing the age of legal eligibility for drivers does not fullly address the underlying causes of traffic collisions. Moreover, it is critical to note that traffic accidents can stem from various factors, including careless driving behaviors or poor transport infrastructure, not solely from young drivers. Thus, stricter penalties for traffic offenses, such as heavy fines or longer license suspensions for repeat offenders. Additionally, the government should invest the national budget in public transportation improvement, including providing more bus and train services to encourage citizens to rely less on private vehicles, ultimately leading to fewer road accidents. The Mass Rapid Transit System in Singapore , for instance, has significnatly reduced the number of private cars by enforcing strict laws and penalties for traffic-based accidents, along with a well-established subway and bus system.
In conclusion, although raising the minimum age for drivers can improve road safety by limiting traffic collisions, it is vital to solve the underlying causes of road-based accidents through severe punishments for traffic offenses and upgrades to public transport. I am also convinced that once these measures are implemented, road users will obey these regulations, creating safety conditions for all drivers.
