The article states that storing patient's medical records in electronic databases have lots of advantages and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that the benefits that is mentioned in the reading actually are very uncertain and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that by save the records in electronic format doctors would reduce the costs. The professor opposes this point by saying that it is unlikely being significant. He states that the they cannot save money because doctors would not throw out the paper format of the records and they save them for emergency back up. As a result, not only they have to pay for traditional paper-based record keeping, but they also have to pay to transfer them in electronic version too.
Second, the author posits that in this way, the doctors would reduce the chances of medical error. Nevertheless, the professor contends that the doctors cannot eliminate making errors becausemost doctors still use pen and paper to write the transcripts by hand. According to the professor, after that the doctor's staff would transfer the written transcripts to the electronic version which they would easily make some errors when reading and typing them.
Third, the article avers that the stored electronc versions can be used in aiding research. The professor refutes this point by stating that it is still difficult to access to theses databases. Because the access to these databases is subjected to strict laws. Based on the lecture, people who want to use this information need the permission from patient and patient can easily block the access to their medical records for everyone except for their own treatments.
