Essay topics:

Pluto lost its status as a planet in our solar system at the International Astronomical Union Conference in 2006. The decision has been wrapped in controversy ever since.

The reading passage and lecturer both discuss the interesting topic of Pluto's status in solar system. Reading article postulates that how Pluto is not a planet while while lecturer points out that there are flaws in writer's claim and contradicts each of three writer's reasons.

First and foremost, reading suggests that, decision of Pluto as a planet was based on the new scientific information about discovery of Pluto. However, lecturer refutes to the claims by stating that, astronomy community was not fairly represented during the voting of Pluto's status and many people disagrees with the decision.

Secondly, the article posits that, Pluto was demoted due to it's size. Again the lecturer finds herself on the other side of argument and says that Pluto was demoted was because of new definition of a planet. According to definition, planet must clear it's neighborhood around it's orbit. But this definition does not hold's true for planets including Earth and Mars since they have many asteroids orbiting them.

Lastly, writer wraps up his argument by posting that, people will soon forget that Pluto was a planet. Lecturer opposes this point by explaining that people are honoring beloved planet Pluto and they are demanding petitions for it. Lecturer thinks that Pluto will always have a place in children's heart as it did from very beginning.
