The diagram illustrates the key stages in the life cycle of a butterfly. Overall, we can see that the cycle occurs in four steps.
Life begins as a tiny egg is laid under the surface of a leaf. From the egg, a baby caterpillar hatches. This young caterpillar feeds on the leaves of the plant it grows on. The caterpillar is also known as a larva. Then, during the next stages of its life, the larva continues to feed and then attaches itself to the twig of the plant. This larva is transformed into a chrysalis which remains attached to the plant. While being adjoined to the plant, many changes take place inside the chrysalis.
In the fourth and the last stage, after about 3-4 weeks, the chrysalis breaks open and a beautifully formed adult butterfly emerges from it. The butterfly feeds on the nectar of the flowers for its food. Finally, the adult butterfly is ready to lay eggs and thereafter the cycle begins again.
