Task 1: The first chart below shows how energy is used in an average Australian household. The second chart shows the greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use.
The pie charts illustrate the energy consumption of an average Australian family divided into six categories and the amount of greenhouse gas released into the air due to this energy use. Overall, the majority of the consumed energy is for heating, water heating as well as other appliances, which are also the main causes of greenhouse gas emissions.
The usage for heating accounted for the largest percentage of 42%, almost half of the total consumed energy. Following closely is the consumption of water heating, at 30%, being the second largest source of energy use. While the amount of energy spent on heating is larger than that of water heating, water heating makes up a significantly higher figure for greenhouse gas emissions compared to its counterpart, at 32% and 15%, respectively. The usage of energy for other appliances, though occupies only 15% of the total consumption, contributes 28% to the emitted greenhouse gas.
On the other hand, the proportion of energy used for cooling, lighting, and refrigeration is the lowest of all, at 2%, 4%, and 7%, consecutively. These are also the groups that make the smallest attribution to the total amount of released greenhouse gas, with 3% for cooling, 8% for lighting, and 14% for refrigeration.
