The line graph illustrates how cargo conveyed by four types of transportation in the UK between 1974 and 2002.
Overall, it can be seen that the number of goods sent by all forms of transport experienced a rise during the period shown.
In 1974, the majority of goods delivered by road was highest at 70 million tonnes and gradually increased to about 80 million tons over the next 20 years. In addition, it continued to increase significantly at approximately 100 million tonnes in 2002. In contrast to this, the pipeline was the lowest in 1974 with only around 7 million, and increased to about 22 million tonnes in 1994. This number remained stable until the end of the period.
Cargo transported by water and rail both accounted for almost 40 million tonnes in 1974. However, while the number for water grew dramatically to almost 60 million in 1994 and continued to increase to more than 60 million tonnes in 2002, the quantities of goods transported by rail decreased to just over 30 million tonnes before reaching its peak at roughly 42 million tonnes in 2002.
