According to the reading passage, it is satated that recently scientists have detected a unique whale that sings at the frequency of 52-hertz which is very different from the sound other whales make. Afterwards the article provides theories that are proposed by scientists about the cause of this animal's eccentric high-pitched song. However, the professor in the listening states why the assumptions mentioned in the reading passage were not correct and refutes them by describing three reasons as follows.
Firstly, the reading claims that this animal can be a hybrid which is the offspring of two other whale species. The professor casts doubt on this point by saying that hybrids usually have a migration pattern and they travel together. He adds that after analyzing the sounds it makes, scientists found out that this animal do not follow this pattern and it migrates alone; hence, it can't be a hybrid.
Secondly, the article posits that the other reason for this high-pitched song is that 52-hertz whale may have a damaged hearing and it may learn to sing by listening to other whales singing. In contrast, the professor says that just as in humans, that pitch is related to animal's physical structure of the throat and it originates in there. According to the professor since there is no connection between the throat and hearing system, this theory is not rational.
Finally, the reading says that other hypothesis is that the 52-hertz whale may be the only known member of a rare species. The professor opposes this point by explaining that if this whale is the only leftover of a extinct species, it should had parents, which were around recently. He goes on to say that technology have been in use for decades, but it hasn't detected any other whales like this one; thus, this theory about the only member of a rare species can not be acceptable.
