In 1970. the Philippines and Malaysia had the highest proportion of urban population, stood at around 32% and 30% respectively. The number of urban residents in both countries then experienced a moderate increase to around 48% in the Philippines, surpassed by the Malaysian at 46% in 1990. From 2000 onwards, in the Malaysia the figure will continue increasing dramatically and reach a peak of over 85% in 2040, the figure in Malaysia fluctuated before growing to around 55% at the end of period.
Regarding to Thailand and Indonesia, Thailand’s city population made up just two-third of 2 countries mentioned before, while in Indonesia, the figures stood at just below Thailand’s with 13% in 1970. Over thirty years, the proportion of people that lived in cities in both countries experienced a gradual growth to the same level at just below 30% in 2000.
