The main idea of both the talk and the passage is about whether the decline of birds in United State is the income of human population growth, and increasing in agriculture and pesticide use or not. Considering this, the passage claims that the number of birds will become fewer and fewer based on three reasons. The professor, on the other hand, not only refutes the author's assessments, but also asserts that the announced option runs counter to the ways the reading just argues. The professor demonstrates three reasons to reject options in the reading.
The first criticism of the passage against which the lecture argues is that birds' habitats continue to deteriorate due to the fact that people disturb them so as to build more home, mall, and offices, thanks to human population growth. As stated by the professor, urban growth affects some type of birds rather than all of them due to the fact that urban growth has provided larger habitats for other types of birds so that urban dwellers always complain about the increase in population of some types of birds such as sea goals, which has led to increase the number of its predators such as hawks in cities.
Moreover, unlike the passage which claims that the growth of human population has increased agriculture, and hence more lands has been deteriorated in order to prepare them for agriculture, which causes to decrease bird populations. The professor illustrates that, nowadays, in US, people tend to use less and less land for agriculture due to introduction of new plants which produce more crops, which has declined the number of agricultural lands.
Finally, the lecture contradicts the fallacy of the lecture that the increase in agriculture due to human populations growth, has increased the use of pesticides which are toxic for birds, saying that it is true that traditional pesticides were destructive, but now, human beings are aware of demerits of that traditional pesticides, and they apply two methods in order to solve the problem. First, they develop much less pesticide. Secondly, they are growing resistant crops that do not harm the birds at all.
All in all, the professor maintains that the reading’s arguments is not convincing.
