The reading discusses the issue that the story of the burning mirror is just a myth or not. In the article, it provides three reasons to support; however, the professor disagrees with the point of views in the article for the following reasons.
First of all, the reading states that the ancient Greeks were not technologically advanced so they did not have such the ability to make the device. On the contrary, the professor claims that they can build the device without high technology. The ancient Greeks could use small flat sheet of copper to accomplish the purpose which is proven by an experiment. Moreover, the Greek mathematicians understood the properties of parabolic shape and they could teach people how to place the sheets.
Second, the reading says that it took a long time to set fire on the ships. In contrast, the professor argues that the experiment was conducted by using only wood which takes a long time to burn. In the ancient time, the Roman boat was made not just on wood. In fact, they coated a water-proof material, pitch, on the ships which could be set on fire by burning mirror in seconds.
Finally, the reading mentions that the burning mirror and flaming arrow are similar so they have no need to build burning mirror. The professor refuses that the effect between using arrows and burning mirror is different: the enemy would notice the flaming arrows and they could defend the arrows, but they would be very surprised when they were attacked by the burning mirror.
