One of your penfriends is going to emigrate to Australia in a few months. They want to improve their English before they leave and have asked for your advice.
Write a letter to your penfriend and give them advice on how to improve their speaking , listening and vocabulary.
You do NOT need to write your own address.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear…,
Dear John,
I'm really excited to hear you are moving to Australia. How has preparations been? In your letter, you asked me for some advice on how to enhance your English Language skills and here are a few points to consider.
Speaking is your most valuable asset in an English-Speaking country. The sole language of communication in Australia is English and therefore, it will be important that you raise your standard of spoken English. To do this, I'd suggest you practice everyday. Try talking to everyone in English Language. Also, you should look for native speakers nearby and communicate with them. You may also consider enrolling in a language school.
For your listening skills, I will advise you tune to the BBC radio and television programs. I think you should make it a point of duty to listen to their 9:00 PM news everyday and checkout some other programs they have that may be helpful. In addition, you should also look for other channels on the television and radio that have nice English Language programs.
Another aspect of your language skills that you should consider working on, is you vocabulary. It's important that you show you have a wide range of vocabulary at workplace. It will also help you to understand the people you will come in contact with very well. To advance you vocabulary, I will suggest you use a number of sites. Visit the British Council website. They have some nice materials and tutorials on vocabulary. You will also see links to other resources on vocabulary and they are quite valuable.
John, I have to do some other stuff. If you need anything, just drop me some lines.
All the best,
Alfred.
