TPO-15 - Integrated Writing Task The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers' crops by eating harmful insec

In the reading section, the writer contends that three are three ways to counter the problem of cane toad‘s rapid spreading in the Australia. These solutions are as building a national fence to stop mobilization of cane toads, training volunteers for the elimination task and utilizing a special purpose manufactured virus; however, the professor in the listening section completely refutes the effectiveness of these solutions by presenting some reasons and examples.

Firstly, the writer claims that a huge national fence stops the spreading of the cane toads. On the contrary, the speaker declines this notion by stating that there is a chance for a small group of cane toads to be able to get through the fence by means of water or steam. This small group that succeed to pass the hurdle, would repopulate on the other side and leave the fence useless.

Secondly, the writer proposes that a group of volunteers can solve this problem. The volunteers would be trained to track and eliminate the cane toads. The professor again is opposed to this notion due to its side effects. As an example, she states that an incautious volunteer may make mistake and harm other species similar to cane toads, such as frogs.

Thirdly, the last solution of the author is to use a specially developed virus that only has effects on the toads. The lecturer also has an opposing view to this method. She claims that if this virus reaches to other places as a continent where the cane toads are naturally a part of the ecosystem, it will interfere and adversely affect the existing cycle of life in that place.
