The reading passage contends that there are several possible causes about what caused the Little Ice Age. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the idea in the reading passage that disrupting of ocean currents has caused the cooling. This is attributed to the fact that even a large amount of cold freshwater was sent by the melted glaciers into the Gulf Stream, it only impacted on Europe, North America, and Southern atmosphere, not everywhere. This is not enough to explain the cause of the little ice age. Thus, the reading passage’s first point is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer casts doubt on the idea in the reading passage that the Little Ice Age have been caused by volcanic eruption. This is because it is true that dark clouds of dust and sulfur gas from volcanic eruption are able to block some sunlight. In addition, it was visible effect in the naked eye, such as colored sunset. If it was occurred at that time, this phenomenon would be recorded during the Little Ice Age. However, there is not record about this phenomenon. Consequently, the reading passage’s second point is refuted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the idea in the reading passage that the cooling of the climate might have been indirectly contributed by substantial decreases in human populations. It is obvious that the considerable period would be taken for recovering forest’s original state. However, there is not enough time to recover their original state from damaged by human. It means trees would not absorb carbon dioxide in order to decrease the greenhouse effect that keeps Earth warm. As a result, the reading passage’s last point is contradicted.
