Overall, British and Swedish declined their greenhouse emission over a span of 40 years; whereas, Italian and Portuguese increased their release of it.
United Kingdom emitted the most amount of carbon dioxide compared to other countries in 1967, which was over ten metric tonnes. However, average emission of citizen decreased gradually to over 8 metric tonnes in 2007, which was still the largest amount among the four countries at the same year. The average amount of greenhouse gas released by Swedish increased from over 8 metric tonnes in 1967 to over 10 metric tonnes in 1977. After reaching its peak in 1977, the emission dwindled to less than 6 metric tonnes in 2007, which is the same as Portugal.
By way of contrast, the average emission of greenhouse gas in Italy expanded from approximately 4 metric tonnes in 1967 to almost 8 metric tonnes in 2007, which ranked the second position below Britain in 2007. The average emission of carbon dioxide in Portugal was merely 1 metric ton in 1967, which is the lowest in these four countries. Although the emission increased moderately to almost 6 metric tonnes in 2007, Portugal was still the country that released the least amount of carbon dioxide per person over the period.
