The reading passage claims that one of the most common North Slope dinosaurs, the elephant-sized edmontosaurs, survived the winter by migrating south to more hospitable regions. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and provides some evidence to refute them all.
First, the reading passage asserts that due to lack of plants growing during frosty winter, edmotosaurs must leave the zone to find a new zone with adequate food, so they migrated. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that edmontosaurs did not have to migrate to find food during the winter. She asserts that on million years ago summer days were warmer than today, and the sun shone 24 hours a day. Therefore, warm temperature and extensive daylight made incredibly conditions to plant producing, so food was plentiful. After that, when winter came, the planets became dead, and edmotosaurs could eat dead plants in the winters.
Furthermore, the author argues that esmonotsaurs lived in the herd, and this kind of living supports the migration hypothesis, because it made migration easier. Moreover, it is confirmed by modern-day migratory animals. On the contrary, the speaker holds the view that living in the herd does not mean they migrated. She claims that living in the herd has other advantages such as extra protection from predators. Also, she provides an example to refute the generalizations of author. For example, resorvelt elks live in the herd, but they do not migrate.
Finally, the reading passage underlines the fact that edmonosaurs were physically capable of migrating long distances. In contrast, the professor dismisses this issue due to fact that juvenile edmonisaurs were not capable of traveling a long-distance way which is required to reach a warm zone for their weakness features. In addition, edomonosaurs could not leave their offspring not far behind because they would not be survived.
