In the lecture, the professor explains why the three reasons listed in the reading passage claiming ethanol is not an alternative to gasoline are not convincing.
To begin with, the reading passage claims that burning ethanol produces carbon dioxide, which contributes to greenhouse effects, the professor in the lecture argued that this can be counterbalanced by the absorption of carbon dioxide when growing the plant. Thus using ethanol does not cause additional damages to the atmosphere.
Secondly, the lecturer explained why using ethanol as a fuel will not affect animals that use plants as food source. Since ethanol is produced using cellulose and animals do not feed on cellulose because they are not able digest it, the production of ethanol will not deprive food of animals.
Last but not least, the speaker dose not agree that ethanol fuel is not competitive in terms of price. Although currently the relatively low price of ethanol fuel is due to government subsidies, the price will not raise dramatically even the United State government does not provide financial help anymore, as long as the need and consume of ethanol increases. The more ethanol fuel is produced, is lower the price would be, making it comparable to that of gasoline, even without government subsidies.
To conclude, the emission of greenhouse gas, the drop of animal food and the uncompetitive price of ethanol fuel cannot be reasons why ethanol is not possible to, at least partially, replace gasoline according to the analysis in the lecture.
