In the lecture, the professor discusses why the evidence and investigation mentioned in the passage on whether Peary had reached the North Pole is flawed and untrustworthy.
To begin with, the passage claims that a committee from the National Geographic Society has confirmed Peary's achievement through an investigation. However, the speaker refutes this by saying that this committee, which consisted of some friends of Peary, carried out the research in merely two days, so its conclusion could be biased.
Secondly, whilst Avery's expedition to the North Pole in less than 37 days proved that some skeptics' argument that Peary travelled too fast is unreasonable, the lecturer points out that Avery did not carry food on his slide, and he travelled when weather was suitable, which were considerable advantages over Peary, making it difficult for Avery to support Peary.
Finally, the reading material states that by measuring the shadows in photos taken by Peary and calculating the position of the sun, experts can prove his arrival to the North Pole. Nonetheless, the old camera used by Peary the time-torn photos themselves, as asserted by the professor, makes it almost impossible to measure the position of the shadows sufficiently precisely to figure out where the photos were exactly taken.
In conclusion, based on the reasons and analysis given by the professor, it is unlikely that the three arguments in the passage can prove he has been to the North Pole in 1909.
