TPO 3 - Integrated:
Rembrandt portrait -the woman with fur collar-
In the reading, the author claims that the famous portrait in Rembrandt collection, which depicted the woman's face with fur collar, was eliminated from the official catalog of Rembrandt paintings in the 1930s due to 3 problems regarding it. However, finding all the ideas questionable and plausible, the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the text and brings some evidences to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that there is a lack of congruity in the woman's dress which combined the servant linen cap with the costly coat with fur collar. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that the recent scrutinizing of this portrait has revealed that the fur collar is not the part of the original painting. Indeed, this piece was added deliberately on the top of the original art virtually 100 years after it had been drawn. She said that perhaps someone thought that if the appearance of the aristocratic woman seems better, the value of the portrait will be raise.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that the shadows and lights are not coordinated perfectly because of entirely bright face of the woman. On the other hand, the lecturer disputes this point by clarifying the fact that in the Rembrandt original painting, the color was simple without dark fur that reflected the light. Consequently, removing the fur, we can see that the combination of shadows and lights is perfect such as others Rembrandts' artwork.
Finally, the author asserts applying the glued pieces of wood instead of only the one wooden panel as the last point for supporting this portrait does not attribute to Rembrandt. The lecturer, thought, dismisses it by pointing out that having added the fur collar, that person forced to attach additional piece of wood in order to increase the value of painting. Furthermore, another crucial point is that according to the recent examination the wood of this portrait is the same as another prominent painting ascribing Rembrandt, the self-portrait with the hat.
