The lecture and the reading both are about the issue of using electronic medical records. Whereas the author believes that there are actually three advantages of using electronic medical records, the lecturer is cautious against them.
First is the issue of reducing cost. Th professor argues that using data bases will not provide any saving, since doctors still have to keep paper records as a backup in case there is any damage of the electronic one. They also use paper format as legal signed document. Consequently, storage space still needed. Because of this the lecturer thinks that the author did not see the hole image.
Second issue is eliminating errors. The lecturer points out that electronic medical records will nor eliminate errors due to illegible doctors hand writing because, doctors are not responsible to enter the information in the system, and so employee still have to read the doctors writing which may not be very clear. That is why the lecturer thinks that this point is not convincing.
Final issue is aiding research. The professor puts forth the idea that ,in US, patients` medical records are protected by strict laws, and that makes it not easy to researchers to explore them. She said that patients is only person who can give permission to use their personal medical information. However the author feels that adapting electronic system will allow researcher to have convenient access ton medical information, which is impossible in paper-based records.
Basically, the professor and the lecturer discusses the pitfalls and merits of adapting electronic medical records in US.
