Bee Nest
The reading passage is about the topic of whether the nests found inside the fossilized trees were created by bees. The professor’s lecture deals with the same issue. However, he thinks that the arguments in the reading are not convincing. The professor uses three points to support his argument.
First, even though the reading passage suggests that no fossil remains of actual bees have been found that date to 200 million years ago, the professor argues in the lecture that there were no trees producing resin. A lack of resin means that bees could not be preserved which that bees could not be preserved at that time.
Moreover, despite the statement in the reading that flowering plants were absent 200 million years ago, the professor contends that bees existed before flowering plants. In other words, he supports the fact that bees feed on non-flowering plants.
Finally, the professor asserts that there is chemical evidence that supports the theory that bees built the chambers. Whereas the author of the reading claims that the fossilized structures lack some of the finer details of bees’ nests such as the chambers lacking caps.
In conclusion, the professor clearly identifies the weaknesses in the reading passage and convincingly shows that the central argument in the reading, the idea that the nests found inside the fossilized trees were not created by bees, is actually incorrect.
