Humpback whales
The lecture and the reading both discuss whether humpback whales some special ability in order to migrate long distance or not. The reading argues that like humans use navigation in this respect and there are some evidences as well. On the other hand, the professor says that these evidences cannot support humpback migration properly.
First, the reading states that the humpback whales have a high intelligence. Their brains are very complicated and it shows that they use their brains for migration. However, the lecture refutes it and claims that there is not any connection between complex brain and high intelligence. In fact, there are some other animals such as dock birds that have an average intelligence not high. Thus, it cannot be acceptable for humpback whales as well.
According to the reading, the whales go in straight lines during the migration. They use the external objects such as stars at night for long movement. In contrast, the professor says that using external objects or forces is different with using stars; indeed, they use a magnetic ability in this regard. In fact, the humpback whales migrate ling distances based on magnetic sense and earth bio-magnetic rather than stars navigation.
Finally, in spite of the fact that the passage claims that humpback whales have an unusual behavior during the migration that is called spy-hopping and use this ability in order to look for stars. On the other hand, the professor states that other marine animals like sharks have this ability, but they do not migrate. The sharks use spy-hopping for searching other animals, not for migration. Therefore, developing spy-hopping ability in humpback whales for migration is an incorrect explanation.
In summary, despite the reading claims in navigation ability in whales, the professor refutes all of the reasons.
