It is stated in the reading passage that employees in the United States prefer to work four days a week instead of five days for less income. In addition to being favorable to employees, it would also benefit economy and companies themselves. However, the lecturer refutes these claims by bringing about cogent arguments.
First, neither economy nor companies would benefit from this idea; since the companies need to provide new employees with medical care insurances and also afford the costs for their training. So companies will end up not hiring new working force, but asking employees to work overtime and do the same amount of work as they would in advance do in five days. Consequently, the job would become unpleasant and joblessness won't decrease. This contradicts with the author's argument in the reading.
Second, life quality of the employees will not improve; The reverse might occur inasmuch as working less would decrease life quality of employees and hinder their chance for professional advances. Moreover, they may either lose their jobs due to economical downturn or strive so hard for promotion to a five day per week job to be the manager of employees who work four days a week.
Overall, this new policy will have a negative impact on economy, companies, and individuals.
