1. A lot of plants and
1. A lot of plants and animals live near the surface of the ocean and that means there's a lot of food near the surface, because there are lots of plants and animals to eat.
2. But if you go down to the deepest parts of the ocean, it's cold and dark.
3. And there is not a lot living down there.
4. So food there is very scarce.
5. So organisms that live down at these great depths have developed special adaptations to help them survive in this environment where food is so hard to find.
6. For example, many deep-sea organisms have body features that enable them to eat prey that are larger than themselves.
7. A good example, um, there is a species of eel that has an enormous mouth and a large stomach that's capable of expanding and these unusual features allow this ell to eat prey larger than itself.
8. That's a big advantage because if the ell eats something big, that's a lot of food, a lot of nutrition.
9. So the ell can go for quite a while before it has to find food again.
10. Another helpful adaptation in some deep-sea organisms is the ability to generate light.
11. And some organisms use that light to help them capture food.
12. For example, there is a kind of fish called the angler fish, and on its head this fish has a little structure that produces light that glows in the dark.
13. This little structure, this little light is positioned close to the fish's mouth.
14. Other fish are attracted to this light.
15. They think it is something small they can eat.
16. So they swim straight toward it and that brings them close enough for the angle fish to capture them and eat them.
A sample Answer to this speaking in text:
The professor talks about the two techniques deep sea animals use to survive in the harsh environment. The first is to eat as much as possible. For example, a kind of eel that lives in the depth has large mouth and stomach, this allows it to eat animals that are bigger than itself, so it’s able to get a lot of nutrition, therefore it can go for quite a while until it finds food again. The second technique is to generate light to attract prey. For example, a fish that’s called angler fish. Part of its head can produce a light that glows in the dark, when other fish sees it, they think it’s something small to eat, so they swim straight toward it and when they get close enough, the angler fish can capture and eat them easily.
