The reading passage deals with the issue of the decline of yellow cedar. The professor's talk focuses on the same topic. However, he believes that those explanations provided by the reading are inadequate. And in the lecture, the professor makes three specific points to back up his point of view.
In the first place, even though the reading passage suggests that the population of yellow cedar is decreasing because of the insects that parasite in it, the professor claims in the lecture that this is not the fundamental cause. That is because the bark and leaves of healthy yellow cedar are poisonous to insects, which means are powerful enough to deal with those beetles. Apparently, the professor's argument disproves its counterpart in the reading.
In the second place, contrary to the statement in the reading that brown bears claw at the trees to feed themselves with tree bark, the professor argues that this reason is not to the overall species. Then he supports this point with the fact that there are no bears on the Island where yellow cedars grow. Besides, the number of bears is also declining. In other words, bears are not responsible for the reduction of yellow cedar.
Further, the professor states that weather cannot explain the issue while the author of the reading claims that gradual climate changes are the cause of this problem. The professor shows that this claim is unwarranted by pointing out that places where the population of the yellow cedar is declining have warm weather instead of freezingly cold which is more likely to make trees die out.
To sum up, the professor precisely discovers the flaws in the reading passage and successfully reveals that the arguments in the passage are incorrect.
