Although the author suggests three main hypotheses to support the benefits of genetically modified trees, the professor finds them dubious and brings up three reasons to refute them all.
Firstly, the author claims that genetic modification causes trees to survive more in harsh situations including virus infection and insects attack. However, the professor holds the view that some natural trees can survive in aggressive situation such as insect infection and climate change even though some of them damage and die. But the genetically modified trees have uniform structure and in the case of any harsh situation, they all will definitely die.
Secondly, the reading states that these kind of trees are financially beneficial and leads farmers to save up their investment and even pesticides. In contrast, the lecturer argues that these process have some hidden costs. For example, companies have to pay farmers. In addition, it would be illegal to grow any food without permission and they have to pay in order to grow plants.
Finally, the speaker claims that genetically modified trees can help save endangered native trees since they can be used as alternative for wild trees. On the other hand, the professor gainsays the idea and says genetically modified trees over compete with natural trees which results in using up all nutrient in soil and water that supposed to be consumed by natural trees.
