Both the reading and lecturer are about a new plan in related to conservation of ecosystem. In the mentioned plan, wood companies can receive a special certification which allows them to attract more customers through advertising or other ways. The reading provides three reasons that this idea will not work in The United State and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all of them unconvincing.
First of all, the author of reading declares that American people are pessimistic about advertising and they prefer not to rely on them. This point is challenged by the professor. He points out that surprisingly, people in the USA can discern a product which belongs to an ordinary company or a product which has been certificated by a well-known agency with international reputation and this aforementioned agency supports ecological matters.
Secondly, the article contends that certificated woods can be very expensive in compared with ordinary products- because wood companies have to spend money on the certification agency for getting this label-; hence, people would rather buy cheap products without any certification; conversely, the lecturer expresses that based on recent studies, when the difference of price between two products is low- say 5 percentage- clients would like to select a product has high quality and it is advantageous for environment; consequently, certificated woods can maintain their own status.
Finally, the reading passage states American wood firms sell their products into the USA; therefore, they will not be able to compete with foreign companies. This argument is rebutted by the professor and he poses that if inside wood companies attempt to appeal the customers in their own country gradually, their benefit - due to selling their wood materials- will cause foreign companies to motivate for creating new wood companies in The United State.
