In the reading, the author claims that there are three viable theories to explain the possible source of the strange noise which heard by Russian submarines in the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean during the 1960s and 1980s. However, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that the strange sound was analogous to the sounds that orcas emit to attract a mate. And also orcas live in the environment where the sound was being heard. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that although it is a reasonable theory at first, orcas usually live and swim near the ocean surface which makes it impossible for sonar systems to detect such a noise.
Additionally, the reading passage holds the view that the strange noise could be attributed to a giant squid and owing to the fact that squids have soft bodies that make them hidden from sonar system, it seems logical that submarines could not find anything related to the noise. It also asserts that squids may have the ability to produce sounds. On the other hand, the lecturer disputes the point by clarifying the fact that reports have shown that noises disappeared after the 1980s and were lasting for just two decades. Therefore, it is not understandable to relate that assumption to a giant squid. Because squids are living there right now.
Finally, the author asserts other military machines as the last point for supporting the theory that the strange sound was produced and emitted by other submarines that were undetectable to the Russian navy. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by pointing out that the noise source was moving around and changing direction very rapidly, that even today's submarines or undersea military machines cannot move such fast.
