ex1
In the reading, the author claims that buying a franchise which is a license issued by a large and famous company is much sensible than starting own independent business by pointing out 3 reasons of support. However, finding all the reasons questionable and implausible, the lecturer repudiates the claim, and based on a recently conducted study she presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that the approach of buying a franchise help franchise owners to find reliable suppliers for their needed goods and services. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that in many franchise contracts the owners should supply their needs from a very specific goods and services. Owing to the fact that if owners are allowed to buy their raw material or maintenance service from the market, they will find them with cheaper price. Hence, the reason presented in the passage not only is not helpful but also it charges more cost.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that franchise can save a new business a considerable amount of money on advertising. That being said, the lecturer disputes it by clarifying the fact that franchising companies earn about 6 percent of the profit from each franchise buyers and it is a quite lot of money. Moreover, they do not advertise for the owners yet they just advertise their brands; thus, many other businesses and places are there and may benefit from it. Should owners invest half of the money which they give companies, they will return back more profits.
Finally, the author draws attention to the security of the job as the last advantage for supporting the claim that buying a franchise is much better. Yet again, the lecturer dismisses it by pointing out that there although the security in buying a franchise is more than launching an independent business, there is a third option which is not mentioned in the passage. The new owners can buy a business from a previous owner. In this case, the chance of success is twice greater than purchasing a franchise.
