The article states that when an arctic explorer, named Peary, claimed he reached the pole in 1909, he became a celebrity. The reading provides three reasons to support his claim. In the listening, the professor explains that the reasons are not authentic enough to support Peary's claim, and she refuses each of them.
First, the text claims that after the investigation of Peary's records and equipment, the national Geography committee concluded that his claim is true. On the contrary, the professor says that the committee was not objective, and they were Peary's friends. In addition, they did not research on the claim carefully, so their report could not be authentic.
Second, the article mentions that some skeptics said that it was impossible for Peary to reach the North Pole in 37 days. But evidence on another explorer named Avery shows that he achieve that less than 37 days with the same trek, so they conclude that Peary's claim is not impossible anymore. On the other hand, the professor states that Avery's speed was different because he did not carry food, and he got it from an airplane, so it is not proper to compare Avery with Peary.
Third, the reading asserts that there are some photographs that declare Peary was on that pole. The angle of the sun in the photos demonstrates that the photos are taken in the North Pole. On the contrary, the professor says that the photos are without shadow, and they are taken with a low-quality camera, so they cannot be a proof of Peary's claim.
