Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss the possibility of sending human to Mars. Albeit the article provides three challenges to claim that sending human to Mars is not practical, the lecturer mentions some discoveries of recent studies solving these challenges.
First of all, travelling to Mars takes a very long time, about two years. According to the author, providing food, water and oxygen for astronauts for this long period seems impossible. However, the lecturer points to hydroponics which are plants growing in water instead of soil. These plants require small spaces and can supply food. Also, they can recycle water vapor and reproduce water to drink in addition to modifying CO2 into fresh air to breath.
Secondly, the author points to the zero gravity in Mars decreasing muscle mass and lowering bone density. Still, the author misses the point that there are a lot of space stations in the space, and astronauts have to spend months there. As the lecturer asserts, there are some techniques to prevent from the adverse impacts on human body, such as regular exercise, so that muscle mass would not decrease, or taking calcium tablet to prevent bone density from lowering.
Finally, the author claims there are some space radiation dangerous for human body, and if we want to prevent from these radiations, we must build a shield to protect the space ship. But this shield would make the ship too heavy, as it adds weight. On the basis of what the lecturer says, sun produces these dangerous radiations occasionally when is active and not all the time. As a solution, we can build a small light shield which not only protects astronauts in active phase but also does not add too much weight.
