The article discusses an interesting topic about the causes of the declining population of the yellow cedar, in the northwestern of North America, and provides three main reasons for support. However, the lecture casts doubts on the claims made by the article. He thinks the causes of this declining are unknown and rebuttes each of the reasons of the reading passage.
First, the reading passage establishes that the decreasing of the trees may be provoked by the cedar bark beetle, a parasite insect that attack the tree. The lecture challenges this claim by explaining that the yellow cedar is one of the most beetle resistant species. The leaves of the yellow cedar are covered by a poison that combat the beetle. Thus, the trees may be dying for another reasons other than the beetles, and the insects are taking advantadge of it.
Secondly, the reading passage suggests that other reason for the disappearing of the yellow cedar could be the brown bears feeding from the sweet tree bark. Questioning this point, the lecture sustains that many areas with no bear population, like the islands, the tree are declining at the same rate as in areas with bear population concluding that this animal should not be cause to blame.
Finally, the reading passage arguments that the climate change is a good reason for the disappearing of the yellow cedar. This hypothesis is rebutted again by the lecture who sustains that the tree population on the south are declining faster than the north one; therefore, frozen root growing too soon in a late winter is not the real cause of the tree extinction.
