The given diagram illustrates the method of conversion of mechanical energy of water to electric energy transmitted along the power lines.
Overall, hydroelectric dam is placed in river. This uses energy form natural flowing water and converts in to potential form of energy that can be used by humans everyday.
Firstly, the water is stored in the reservoir, at a high level. At the right corner of the reservoir, there is bar shaped piece with twelve rectangular hollow spaces, called intake. The Intake allows water to flow through it. This water is forced along a narrow channel, named penstock. The water rushes past the turbine, hitting its blades and causing it to rotate. The water is flown back to the river.
The long shaft connects turbine with the generator, which moves along the turbine. The energy flows through this shaft and thus, passed to the generator, which converts this kinetic energy in to electric energy. The electric energy is stored in the powerhouse and conveying through the long distance power lines.
