Reading and lecture discusses about the animals from olden times. Reading states that animals were larger than today. While, lecture thinks that someone should not come to conclusion without proper evidences. He put forth reasons for holding his opinion.
First, reading suggests that gigantic animals were results from the abundant supply of oxygen in earth’s ancient atmosphere. Lecture challenges this point made in reading. Professor points out that there was no adequate oxygen available due to frequent volcanic activity. In addition, survival of animals was critical due to presence of harmful gases.
Second, reading implies that large number of animals must have nourished animals as a result they grew in size. In addition, reading states that large body trait must have been passed to the offspring. In contrast, author says that early plants were malnourished to support other sustenance of other animals. Furthermore, she points out that plants depended on contaminated gases evidenced from the study of fossil.
Third, reading put forth that researchers thought that warm climate might be factor in exponential growth of animals as surplus energy can be transmitted to the channels for later use. Lecture casts doubt on this statement. He thinks that animal body required to cool off after exposing to heat, so they would not have chance to grow bigger without this process. As a result, lecture successfully argued the points made in reading.
