Researches are prerequisites of development, and any developmental activities done unaccompanied by research will not be sustainable and effective. Since, researches are important, are there any negative impacts of research? The prompt recommends that government should neglect its negative impact, if there are any, and should not put bar at it. I, however, disagree with this opinion and will provide reasons for it.
First of all, history is evident that the technology has produced some disastrous event on the earth. For example, events such as atom bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and nuclear disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima have resulted in death of number of lives and have put human lives at risk. Invention of atom bomb and nuclear power plants were the results of researches done on nuclear science and had the government put restrictions on research on that field, such catastrophe would not have happened.
Secondly, researches mostly require hefty funding and expertise and in absence of these, they rarely give good outcomes. Sometimes, instead of investing money in research, it can be used to solve other more urgent problems. Especially, in poor countries, it would be imprudent for government to use its budget in research rather than provide basic needs to its poor citizens.
Thirdly, in the name of research, many unethical experiments are done in which not only animals but also humans are abused and tortured. For example, Russian sleep experiment was done among five prisoners in 1940 where they were locked in a room with food and water, but were not allowed to sleep for 30 days. This was one of the cruelest things humans have done and the government did stop this research. Thus, in order to develop new products, scientists sometimes go beyond the morality which is inhumane.
Government should prohibit researches that can bring negative effect in the future and also, should make proper use of funds, and should prohibit experiments that does not take care of human and animal rights.
