he following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Balmer Island Gazette.
"On Balmer Island, where mopeds serve as a popular form of transportation, the population increases to 100,000 during the summer months. To reduce the number of accidents involving mopeds and pedestrians, the town council of Balmer Island should limit the number of mopeds rented by the island's moped rental companies from 50 per day to 25 per day during the summer season. By limiting the number of rentals, the town council will attain the 50 percent annual reduction in moped accidents that was achieved last year on the neighboring island of Seaville, when Seaville's town council enforced similar limits on moped rentals."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
Argument states that limiting the number of rentals, the town council will attain the 50 percent annual reduction in moped accidents is not logically convincing. Premise author gave for conclusion is that last year on the neighboring island of Seaville, when Seaville's town council enforced similar limits on moped rentals which is totally absurd. Author did not consider some of the crucial assumptions, due to lack of consideration of assumptions argument is totally not effective as well as unsound.
First assumption argument assumes is that limiting the number of rentals is only effective way to limit moped accidents but author did not give any explanation for that. There may be reason that traffic laws are not implemented by government very strictly, due to lenience of those law moped accidents happened. Traffic laws are one of essential parameter regarding accidents if someone did not follow laws and become insouciance about them, then inexorably accidents will happen. No matter we limiting the number of rentals. Even we do it by dwindling moped rental companies from 50 per day to 25 per day, still accident will happen because of vanished strict traffic laws. But author did not consider this assumption which makes his argument ineffective.
Second assumption argument assumes is that neighboring island of Seaville achieved last year annual reduction in moped accidents by limiting the number of rentals, that same denouement will happen in Balmer Island. There is possibility that citizens of island of Seaville are law abiding from every aspect like traffic, tax etc. They opposed and complained about people who did advertently not followed the laws. Government due to strict laws seized their license. Due to which moped vehicles number dwindled. But author misinterpreted that because they attained it by limiting number of rentals. But author did not give any exegesis regarding his assumption which makes his argument ineffective.
Third assumption argument assumes is that author limitation on the number of rentals moped only during summer season. But he wants to dwindle percent annual reduction in moped accident then what about winter season? Author did not consider this assumption. There is possibility that during summer season limitations on number of rented moped vehicles may dwindle accident rate, but during winter season it will become same then net effect will be cancelled out which will make his argument, By limiting the number of rentals, the town council will attain the 50 percent annual reduction in moped accidents will be unsound.
ultimately argument is totally unsound. Evidence given for support of argument that By limiting the number of rentals, the town council will attain the 50 percent annual reduction in moped accidents does little to support. Because he did not consider above assumptions. Argument can be strengthened by claiming that there are strict traffic laws and like island of Seaville people of Balmer Island are law abiding citizen and by imposing limitation on the number of rentals moped annually not only during summer season.
