Essay topics:

The best way to solve environmental problems caused by consumer-generated waste is for towns and cities to impose strict limits on the amount of trash they will accept from each household.

The environmental hazards caused by too much consumer generated waste is a serious topic to be considered for the protection of nature. The prompt tries to address this issue by proposing to impose strict limits on the amount of trash accepted at a household level. I mostly disagree with the prompt for the two reasons stated below. However, I do concede that in some cases, the idea of restricting some specific type of waste at a household level might make sense.

Firstly, it doesn't make sense to impose a limit on the amount of trash collected because of the very reason that people would always find other ways of disposing trash if the authority imposes a limit on the amount of trash. For example, people might provide the maximum amount of trash accepted from one’s household and then dispose of the remaining in unethical ways. To be specific, people might start burying plastic waste which would affect the soil, eroding its nutrients. Likewise, one might litter plastic or paper trash which, when consumed by animals like cows, would be very harmful. In addition, one might dispose of waste in river bodies causing harm to fishes and other aquatic life. Also, one might burn the dry waste from their household which causes pollution and increases global warming. Therefore, the premise of imposing a restriction on the amount of waste collected would solve all the environmental problems rings hollow.

Secondly, when the above said limits on collection of waste are imposed, it might be possible that people might try to reduce their consumption of some specific goods which mainly lead to harmful trash. Although this seems desirable at the moment, lowering consumption directly results in lowering production of the said goods, disrupting the supply chain. And when production of goods halts, it not only has an adverse effect on the economy but also on the jobs of the people who are employed in the industries. For example, if all households reduce the consumption of plastic and paper to limit its waste, then the entire manufacturing industry would collapse, resulting in unemployment of thousands of people and hampering the economy. So, trying to solve environmental problems by solely imposing limits on the trash collected does not hold water.

However, in some cases, the idea of restricting some specific kinds of waste from households might make sense. For example, the authority could collect only dry waste from every household forcing the people to find appropriate methods like composting to dispose of the wet waste generated from their household. Therefore, in some cases, it makes sense to impose certain limits on the amount of trash collected in every household so that people are well aware of the consequences of producing too much waste and thus environmental problems can be catered in a much better way.

In conclusion, solely by restricting the amount of waste collected at the household level does not address the rampant environmental problems. However, in some cases, imposing limits on some type waste could be of some advantage by reducing the waste and thus reducing the harmful hazards of thrash on the environment. The protection of mother nature is a serious and long lasting responsibility of each person and would require constantly thinking of new ways to dispose of household waste and this issue should not be undermined.
