Education is one of the most effective tools in building a nation for socio-economical and cultural benefits. However, education at times is highly co-related to the ideologies, a student imbibes during his teen, pre-mature years and the credibility of the sources of education he acquires. The issue suggests that there should be free education for students who are admitted to universities without any sufficient financial support. In my opinion, I partially agree with the statement owing to multiple factors.
Providing free edcuation to poor students might seem as a good step by critics, but deciding the financial status or the threshold for consideration in giving the scholarships, could be a daunting task for the government. Adding to this, incentives and scholarships are more fruitful when given to students who are diligent, committed to get education in the most formal way and are worth the "investment" done by the government. For example, let's take a scenario where a poor student and a middle class student gets accepted to the university. Here, the poor student will avail scholarship anyway, without any factor of grades or knowledge coming into consideraton. On the other hand, the middle class student, inspite of having such great academic background cannot get this. He should need some impetus for government as a mode of encouragement to do good for the society. But only because of financial superiority taken into factor, the more deserving students could be devoid of any such financial help. So, deciding of giving scholarship only to poor students in such cases would mean sheer injustice to the real deserving ones.
Having said that, I am not biased over the fact that only level of competence should be taken into comparison. One of the more plausible scenarios could be also possible that, giving such support to the weaker section would bring out individuals that are capable enough who will shoot their lives towards prosperity by being sedulous and focused. One of the good measures for such scenarios would be implementing a sytem where in a student irrespective of his economic background has to take a set of standardized tests, that would incorporate certain weightage to the test results as well as their financial stability. This "set" would also undermine the well-known counter argument that "a single examination cannot ascribe to a candidate's proficiency". In today's world, standardized tests are being conducted by various governments around the world, not only for underscoring certain candidates for their performance, but also to refine out the cream of the student population in prestigious institutes for the pursuit of education.
Giving free education to students as stated in the discussions above would definitely boost students' morale and act as a sign of the support of education system on such students to graduate with flying colors. However, setting the number of students who will avail these scholarhsip would also probably burn a hole in the pockets for the government. Providing scholarships are not only dependent on the ability of students, but also depends on teh financial stability of the government. For an instance, if poor countries of Africa - where more than half of the population is living under the thresholds of poverty - are allowed to attain such scholarships, the government might become bankrupt in itself. And if the government inadvertently without any malevolent intentions, suddenly stops the scholarship programme, due to lack of financial reserves, would incite a lot of upcoming university students to insatiation. This would further dicourage them to achieve any more education thereafter. However, countries like India, China, United States have abundant of such reserves and a strong economy to burden the pressure of providing poor learners, free means of education.
With an overview, I would say that giving financial support and underwrite some poor category would be a welcome move by all. But it also depends on the sustainability of the country's economy by such investments.Only giving scholarships to lure the weaker section with charlant attitudes might not affect the government's stability in the shorter run, but might cause a lot of regret and struggle for the governments in continuing such philanthropic programmes.
