The first graph shows the number of trips abroad by UK citizens and visits to the UK by foreign tourists over a 20-year period while the second bar chart illustrates five most popular destinations for UK visitors in 1999.
Overall, there was a significant increase in visit numbers from and to the UK. Likewise, France was more attractive to UK travellers than the remaining four nations, namely Spain, the USA, Greece and Turkey.
In 1979, approximately 13 million residents of the UK paid a visit to another country, slightly higher than the corresponding figure for foreign visitors. Subsequently, the former data rocketed for the rest of the given course, reaching a high of over 50 million in 1999. The number of overseas tourists also experienced a rise, albeit at a slower pace.
Besides, France was the most favourite destination which captured the likes of around 11 million UK residents. This was closely followed by Spain where nearly 10 million people took their journey. Simultaneously, statistics for the three other countries was less striking with the USA recorded the highest with 3 million.
