The following chart demonstrates the average distance travelled per person per year during the years 1985 and 2000 in England by various traveling modes.
Overall, car remained the most popular mode of travel in both the years where as taxi and bicycle came at last.The average distance traversed by all modes of travel increased considerably in the fifteen year period from 1985 to 2000.
In the year 1985, the average distance travelled per person per year was about 4,740 miles ( all modes) where car was the most widely used conveyance followed by local bus and train (429 and 289 miles respectively). In contrast, in the year 2000, local bus covered only 274 miles, showing a decrease in its popularity where as train's average distance increased to 366 miles. Less people walked in 2000, than in the year 1985 (255 miles), covering about 237 miles. Car still remained the most famous choice, covering about 4,806 miles of the total distance by all modes of 6,475 miles in the year 2000.
The least used modes of transport in the year 1985 were taxi (13 miles) and bicycle ( 51 miles). Following them was long distance bus( 54 miles per person per year). After a lapse of 15 years, in the year 2000, the least popular were bicycle and taxi ( 41 and 42 miles respectively) , by contrast, the long distance bus was used more, covering about 124 miles in the year 2000.
