The table shows percentages of consumer expenditure for three categories of products and services which five countries spent on in 2002.
Overall, it is evident that all five countries spent the most on food/ drinks/ tobacco, but much less on leisure/ education.
Food/ drinks/ tobacco was the largest expenditure item for Turkey and Ireland with Turkey the biggest one, at 32,14% and Ireland, at approximately 29%, whereas the other three countries spent almost the same amount, ranging between 15% and 19%. The highest proportion of spending on leisure and education also went on Turkey, at 4,35%, with Ireland having half of Turkey’s proportion, while Spain spent the least on this, at only 1,98%. Moreover, Italy and Sweden had the same percentages for leisure and education.
Out of five countries, consumer spending on clothing/ footwear was noticeably higher in Italy, at 9% with Sweden having the least proportion, at just 5,40%, while the other three countries spent around the same amount, at just over 6%.
