The three pie graphs compare spending habits of a UK school in 1981, 1991 and 2001. Overall, the main source of expenditure was teachers’ salaries throughout the period in question, ranging from 40% in 1981 to 45% in 2001, with a peak at 50% in 1991.
The other outgoings showed a wide range of different trends. Insurance and furniture and equipment increased over the two decades. In fact, the former quadrupled its initial proportion (from 2% to 8%), whilst the latter experienced dramatic fluctuations, with an overall climb from 15 to 23%, but also a huge drop to 5% in 1991.
On the other hand, the remaining types of expenses decreased. Payments to other employees declined steadily from just under 28% to 15%. Furthermore, other resources, such as books, after a one third growth from the 1981 figure of 15%, came back reaching 9% in 2001.
To conclude, while the chief expense of the school remained the same, the importance of the other ones changed significantly over the 20 years considered.
