Average Household Expenditures by Major Categories

The two pie charts compare 5 major expenditures by major categories in 1950 and 2010.

At the first glance, the housing distinguishably held the largest part among all categories at 72.1% in 1950. However, it has dropped remarkably to 22.0% in 2010, less than a quarter, which is a nearly 60% decrease. Contradictory, the food expedition is intriguingly increased by 22.8% in these years, from a second largest figure at 11.2% in 1950 to 34.0% in the year of 2010, taken the place of housing and becoming the top.

And for other proportions also on the charts, for instance, the education and health care, as a relatively minor factor, are remaining at a level of lower than 7% and 5% respectively. But the situation looks completely different for transportation and other expeditions, they have all grown considerably by 10 to 15 percent, making themselves into major factors 60 years later in 2010.

To sum up, in the period of these 60 years, the balance of expenditures has dramatically shifted from housing to food. The change of popular interest in transportation and other expeditions can also be witnessed in the comparisons between two charts.
