The given bar chart compares the percentage of urban residents in different parts of the world in 3 years: 1950, 2007, 2050.

Overall, the proportion of the world’s population living in cities will have increased from year to year. In addition, it is predicted that in 2050, there will be a majority of people live in urban areas.

In 1950, the percentages of urban dwellers in Africa and Asia were only 15% and 17% respectively. However, rapid urbanization is expected in both regions, whose urban population is estimated to rise significantly from around 15% in 1950 to over 60% in 2050. In contrast, the percentage of city dwellers in Oceania only experienced a modest rise of 9% from 1950 to 2007 and is projected to be 76% in 2050.

In Europe, Latin America/Carribean, there were 51% and 42% of people living in cities respectively in 1950, whereas the figure for North America was at 64%. All of the mentioned regions are predicted to have a majority of urban residents (around 85 – 90%) in 2050.
